A tribute to color, transition, and nature, Aurora features the math concept - Pursuit Curves. As the curves “chase” one another they overlap, intertwine, and harmonize to form a vast array of three dimensional - at times simple - at times complex - patterns that take many shape and forms: e.g. trees and vines, exotic animals, nebulae, or even people in strange postures. Much like cloud viewing, what is seen depends on the viewer. As the colors cycle, the shapes seem to change with them, flowing from one form to another. The basis of the code is relatively simple: a series of lines that progress with each line following another, and the Leader is always on the Followers tangent. The order of which line follows which determines the pattern, and with 10-15 lines (as applied in Aurora), there are literally trillions of possibilities. The colors for Aurora were designed by the outstanding watercolor artist @RoseJade_eth. She sampled palettes from her past works and created some just for Aurora. I broke these palettes into groups of 4-6 colors, from which the code samples 2-4 and interpolates between them across color space. The result is nearly perfect gradients that repeatedly cycle. Aurora is the culmination of a year’s worth of effort studying generative art, learning javascript, p5js and creative coding, and decades worth of inspiration from the beauty of our natural world.
